Earth's Eco-librium
A scientist friend once told me earth's powerful, interconnected eco-system tends to find equilibrium any way it can. When something gets out of balance, nature will reach a tipping point and then will somehow return to balance...earthquakes are like chiropratic adjustments, disease solves overpopulation and climate change seems to be a way earth's systems respond to natural and manmade environmental impacts and geological changes, etc..
Animals also tend toward a state of equalibrium if they are in their indiginous habitats (not transplanted by man). Births will decrease or increase according to population stresses, naturally occuring illnesses will cull, or a healthy preditor/prey relationship will establish sustainable territories with manageable numbers of healthy members. In this way, each interdependent species will thrive and all will have adequate food and water sources. Survival is what is important in the animal world. Nature is not a moral or ethical entity.
Humans are animals who, while also driven by the need to survive, are able to make moral or ethical choices about whether to be in harmony with the world or to create disharmony. Throughout recent human history, we haven't seemed to fully understand our continued existance depends on recognizing earth's ecological best interests...being in harmony. We seem to want to try to make earth do what we want and not really think about the consequences...ie. we often exist in an aggressive and delusionary state of disharmony with the natural world.
Now, as a consquence of our folly, we are facing a global environmental crisis of proportions even scientists do not fully understand. I hope we can learn quickly from our mistakes and, in the next few years, join together in a massive global effort to try to restore harmony to our world ecologically, economically and politically.
If we ignore the warning we have been given and end up bringing an end to Terra's dominant life forms, including ourselves, earth will find equilibrium again without our help.
